Wiper Blades and Belts Buying Guide: Wipers, V-Belts, Timing Belts, Tensioners

Wiper blades and belts are wear items — poor visibility in rain or a snapped belt can put you in danger. This guide covers wiper blades (framed / beam / hybrid), V-belts, timing belts and tensioners: selection standards, wear indicators and replacement intervals.

Wiper Blades: Framed vs Beam

Framed vs beam blades

Framed (conventional) blades are cheap (USD 4-11/pair) and last 1-2 years. Beam blades flex evenly, hug the glass, run quieter and last 2-3 years (USD 11-28/pair). For 2015+ vehicles Biyang recommends beam blades — better wiping and less noise.

Getting the size right

Sizes are printed on the wiper arm (e.g. 24" + 18") or listed by vehicle model — Biyang can verify. Note that driver and passenger sides usually differ in length; don't buy two of the same size.

When to replace wiper blades

(1) Streaks or water film after wiping; (2) blade chatter/judder; (3) hardened or cracked rubber. Replace immediately at the first sign — blurred vision in rain is dangerous driving.

V-Belts (Accessory Belts)

What the V-belt drives

It drives the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump and water pump. Multi-rib (serpentine) belts are more compact and efficient — today's mainstream.

V-belt replacement interval

Every 60,000-80,000 km or 4-5 years. Warning signs: (1) squealing at startup (belt slip); (2) visible cracks or glazing; (3) no charging (belt snapped). Biyang recommends preventive replacement at 60,000 km to avoid a roadside failure.

Timing Belt, Tensioner and Idler Pulleys

The timing belt: the engine's lifeline

A snapped timing belt means pistons hitting valves and a full engine rebuild (USD 1,400-4,200+). Never exceed the replacement interval: (1) follow the manual strictly (typically 80,000-100,000 km or 5-6 years); (2) always replace the tensioner and idlers together with the belt.

Timing chain vs timing belt

Some modern engines use timing chains (lifetime or 200,000 km), but they run slightly noisier and cost more to repair. Check whether your model uses a belt or a chain when buying.

FAQs about Wipers & Belts

Answers compiled from years of hands-on experience by the Biyang technical team, to help you resolve sourcing and usage questions fast.

QHow often should wiper blades be replaced?▾
AFramed every 1-2 years, beam every 2-3 years. In cold northern climates rubber ages faster — replace each autumn before winter.
QHow do I choose wiper sizes?▾
AThree ways: (1) read the size printed on the wiper arm; (2) check the owner's manual; (3) send Biyang your vehicle model. Common combinations: 24+18, 26+16, 22+18 (inches).
QCan I drive with a broken V-belt?▾
ANo. With the belt gone: the alternator stops charging (battery drains), power steering fails (wheel becomes heavy) and the water pump stops (engine overheats). Pull over immediately and call for assistance.
QHow often should the timing belt be replaced?▾
AStrictly per the manual — usually 80,000-100,000 km or 5-6 years. Biyang strongly recommends replacing the tensioner and idlers at the same time to avoid paying labor twice.
QDoes a snapped timing belt total the engine?▾
ADepends on the engine: (1) interference engines (the vast majority) — pistons hit valves, requiring a rebuild; (2) non-interference engines (some older models) — no valve contact, but the car still needs towing. Replace preventively on schedule; never gamble on it.
