Car Bulb Buying Guide: LED, Halogen and HID Headlights

Bulbs decide night-driving safety. This guide covers LED headlight upgrades, halogen bulbs (H1/H4/H7/9005/9006) and HID xenon: key selection points, color temperature, decoder requirements and vehicle fitment.

LED Headlights: Color Temperature, Brightness, Decoders

Color temperature: 6000K vs 4300K vs 3000K

3000K warm yellow (best penetration in rain/fog); 4300K neutral white (closest to factory HID, most comfortable); 6000K cool white (looks brighter, but poor penetration in bad weather); 8000K+ blue-violet (decorative only — nearly invisible in rain). Biyang's advice: 6000K for city driving, 4300K where rain/fog is common, 8000K only for looks.

Decoders: the required course for LED upgrades

CAN-BUS systems on 2015+ cars monitor bulb power draw; LEDs (25W vs 55W halogen) trigger 'bulb out' errors. You need a CAN-Bus decoder (typically USD 4-11 per pair) or self-decoding LED bulbs (about 30% pricier but plug-and-play). PHILIPS LED canbus-ready bulbs distributed by Biyang skip the decoder entirely.

Halogen Bulbs: H1/H4/H7/9005/9006

Base type matching

H1/H3/H7: single-filament high beam or fog; H4: dual-filament hi/lo; H15: high beam + DRL; 9005 (HB3) / 9006 (HB4): common on American cars; H8/H9/H11/H16: common on Japanese cars. Biyang's tech team can verify the correct base for your vehicle.

Halogen lifespan and upgrades

Halogen bulbs last 500-1,000 hours (1-2 years). Upgrade paths: (1) high-output halogen (e.g. PHILIPS X-tremeVision, +130% brightness); (2) direct LED swap (mind cooling and decoding). Biyang supplies both OE-grade halogen and high-output upgrades.

HID Xenon Essentials

HID vs LED

HID is bright (3,000-5,000 lm) but slow to reach full output (3-5 seconds) and mostly found on older designs. LED starts instantly, lasts 30,000 hours and draws less power (25W vs 35W) — today's upgrade of choice. For 2018+ vehicles Biyang recommends going straight to LED.

FAQs about Lighting & Bulbs

Answers compiled from years of hands-on experience by the Biyang technical team, to help you resolve sourcing and usage questions fast.

QDo LED bulbs need a decoder?▾
AMost 2015+ vehicles do. Check whether swapping one bulb triggers a 'bulb failure' message; if so you need a CAN-Bus decoder or canbus-ready LED bulbs. PHILIPS LED bulbs from Biyang are canbus-ready and plug-and-play.
QIs higher color temperature better?▾
ANo. Perceived brightness actually drops as color temperature rises (8000K blue looks dimmer than 4300K white), and high-K light penetrates rain and fog poorly. Biyang suggests 6000K for city use and 4300K for frequent rain/fog.
QDo HID bulbs need a new ballast?▾
AFactory HID systems already include a ballast — just replace the bulb (35W D1S/D2S/D3S/D4S types). Converting halogen to HID requires the full kit (bulbs + ballasts + dedicated harness); have a professional installer do it.
QHow often should bulbs be replaced?▾
AHalogen 500-1,000 hours (1-2 years); LED 30,000 hours (10+ years); HID 2,500-3,000 hours (3-5 years). Biyang suggests keeping a spare halogen pair in the car for emergencies.
QAre PHILIPS bulbs Chinese-made?▾
APHILIPS is a Dutch brand founded in 1891 and a global lighting leader. Biyang is a PHILIPS authorized distributor in China; all products are guaranteed genuine.
